| Are Fairytales and traditional folk songs a sort of poetry?

Fairy tales have been manipulated a lot over the years. Most were much longer, darker and more adult than what we have now. From my point of view it depends how it is written and the length of the piece. Beowulf is allegedly a poem, and yet it is incredibly long and difficult to read, much more like a novel. If it is a piece of writing which you read and enjoy does it really matter what title you assign to it?
