establishing the tone:

Listening to the radio, experience of pine sap for first time,
mentioning things people did in the early 1960s such as the hit tune, "At the Hop," playing Monopoly.

Attitude towards America: reverent and awed by the entire environment of radio, records, home, trees, holidays, family together in peacefulness, the idea of the Great Plains and the railroads, and the description of walking into the snow as though for the first time ever, and that the world was new and immaculate.
