RWE belonged to an american movement in philosophy and aesthetics which called itself 'transcendentalist'. You could call most of RWE's poetry 'lyric with mystical overtones'. You could also call it 'mystic with lyrical overtones'. Transcendentalism was an offshoot of Romanticism (both were very interested in the power of the Imagination) but didn't really have much to do with Realism. Realism tends to be interested in Man as a member of a Society. Romanticism is more interested in the Individual. RWE - and all of Transcendentalism - was definitely in the second box. |
