is it ever possible to have apolitical campaign by a republican when they don't do the smear attempts?

i am serious. it seems that they are notorious for whats known as gotcha politics where they do one of 3 things. a) take a position you took on an issue...exaggerate it to exponential degrees, say that the exponentialed position is yours and attack you for essentially a position that is not yours. b) take some innocent comment you made or an honnest mistake...and twist it to make it look like the mistake was literally what you meant to say and to draw the worst possible connotations from the most extreme interpretation of your slip up. For example Michelle obama saying she is proud of how americans are engaged in this election more than ever....is now really her saying how she hates america. c) If you want to end a war...which is going on 5 years and is hugely expensive financially and in lives to americans, a war...which was founded on bad intel....then you must hate america and love terrorists. If you want to talk directly to countries that are america's enemiesengaging in whats commonly known as diplomacy...then you must be a terrorist lover since you do not take the position that we will bomb them before ever talking to them.Why is it necessary that republicans make these childish arguments that anyone with a brain can see through? Why is it they cant run campaigns and defeat their political opposition by simply making a more intelligent case why their positions are superior?
