Different stars on the Republican and Democrat logos (with the elephant and the ass)?

if you look closely at the republican and at the democrat logos - you'll notice that the stars are different - ones are upright and the others are upside down!
why??

Actually, I am a republican, not that it matters...
But what is the reason anyway?
Same goes for the Medal of Honor.
