schnookie, goober fooey moohoo Sorry, you did say in your own words I think democrats and conservatives (or labor) are fundamentally the same, they believe in community, socialism, welfare, spending money on things like hospitals, education, etc and are union based for the blue collar worker. Whereas republicans and liberals are fundementally the same, they believe in capitalism and free enterprise and support big business and the white collar workers. At the end of the day I think Billy Connolly summed it perfectly when he said that "the desire to want to become a politician should bar you for life from ever becoming one !" |

Conservative: A person who is extremely old fashioned, narrow minded, someone who wants to preserve tradition and who is afraid of progress and change. Liberal: Open minded, welcomes change, is for progress and is for freedom to be individual. Republican: Greedy bastards who look out for corporations before people. Democrat: Believing in equality, believing in democracy and believe in putting people before dollars. |

in canada we have liberal and conservative as party names so its even more confusing conservatism is generally seen as status quo anti change liberalism is about equality and openness to different ideas, which is naturally going to mean constant change since societies values are changing all the time. Democrats are the equivalent to Liberals up here as Republicans are to Conservatives. we have to make the distinction between the parties and the values they represent by referring to the generic values in the non-capitaslized form such as "small C conservative " or "small L liberal" to let people know that their views don't necessarily follow their party line. example a conservative democrat would be a conservative thinker who votes democrat . up here that would be a "small C conservative" left and right wing are also good descriptors democrat / liberal = left wing republican / conservative = right wing |
