| Martin Luther King was a Republican, why do blacks think republicans don't
speak for them? the best civil rights leader in this country was a republican so what gives, why aren't there more minority republicans http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=16500 |

MLK actually WAS a Republican although he later changed his registration to Democrat. The reason is that Democrats, who have a long history of identity politics when it suits them, mostly refused to register blacks until some time in the 1960s. Any blacks who wanted to vote were registered without prejudice by the Republican Party, the party of Abraham Lincoln. The 1964 Civil Rights Act was only passed by the efforts of the Senate Minority Leader GOP Sen. Everett Dirksen, who got the rest of the Senate GOP members to support it despite oppostion from Democratic Senators including Al Gore. President John F Kennedy voted against the 1957 Civil Rights Act when he was a Senator. The governors who kept the schools segregated were Democrats. Blacks should read their history instead of blindly listening to the Democrats to whom they really owe very little. Younger Democrats should also rethink their prejudices. They have been lied to for decades.

MLK was a Republican and were most blacks until the the Civil Rights Act was signed but it really amazes me the amount of people who say he was a DEM. Southern Dem were against the CRA and even formed the KKK but when LBJ signed the Bill the black vote was secured because of the perception that Dems really cared about them. Dems have forced the black community to live in ghettos with generation after generation dependent on the well fare. Blacks who achieve success on their own tend to vote Republican but the Republican party does not subscribe to group politics and are really bad at getting the message out. Jesse and Al keep the black population in order so that the dems can keep winning. If the black population ever stopped voting dem then the dems would never win an election. 60 percent of the vote for the Dem party is from minorities but does that make Cons racists? No but that is the perception not reality. |

MLKs choice of party is irrelevant to me. Today's Repub party has been overrun with neoconservatives. This occurred during the 70s and hopefully will end in the near future. The problem is not the party. The problem is the neoconservative wing of the party. |
