OK, the most basic principal guiding the two is their position on the role of the federal government. Republicans support small government, and government noninterference. They don't support many social programs, and don't want to tax or regulate very much. Democrats believe that it is the role of the government to maintain standards for the people who live in America. This means providing social programs, regulating a minimum wage and safety standards. It costs money to run these programs, so they tend to support more taxes. There are exceptions to this, such as republicans wanting to legislate abortion, legislate who can and can not get married, and tax to support the war in Iraq, all of which your average democrat thinks the government should stay out of. |

Democrats want to run (and ruin) your life Republicans think you are smart enough to do it yourself. Democrats are okay with tens of thousands of people dying in a foreign country as long as they do it quietly and it doesn't show up on the news. Republicans have principals and are willing to help no matter what Hollywood thinks. |

During the 20th century, the Republican party was seen as supporting big business and for a hands-off approach to government and business. Lower taxes and less government spending on social programs was important. They believed that individuals and the free market were the most effective agents of controlling society (which I tend to agree with). The Democrats, during this time, were seen as supporters of the working man and they believed that the government was responsible for making sure that all people had good opportunities and that there were social programs in place to help the little guy out in times of need. Both are valid viewpoints, and both had a good net effect on society; they tended to balance each other out. Today, however, both parties have abandoned their core values. Neither of them are what they used to be at all. The Republicans have become tax and spend freaks, and the Democrats have shot off into an elitist far-left stance that supports socialist style policies. I really hope that people start seriously looking at a third party in the near future because the two big ones we have now are destroying our nation. |

Republicans Want to spend money but not pay it back by not raising taxes. Also they let businesses run all over the common man un regulated. and they start unnecessary wars. Democrats have to raise taxes to pay off the Republican over spending. They are more for common man. |

Democrats expect leaders to steal from the rich and give money to them. Republicans think we should earn money fairly and not steal from anyone. Democrats believe in killing people because they have committed the crime of being unborn. Republicans think everyone deserves a chance, even unborn people. |
