Why are the democratic and republican parties anti-each other?

I'm listed as a republican but I agree and disagree with certain views from BOTH parties. However; I have been amazed by how many people are unable to accept the fact that we as United States citizens should be more open minded and instead of verbally attacking each other for the party they are listed as should try to see that (for the most part) both parties are there to help this country and have good ideas. I'm just wanting to hear why so many people hate the other party (BOTH have bad apples). And also do you think that this nation has the ability to be torn apart by this type of simple minded behavior?
