White House opposes 3.5 percent pay raise

By Rick Maze - Staff writer
Posted : Wednesday May 16, 2007 17:47:40 EDT

Troops don’t need bigger pay raises, White House budget officials said Wednesday in a statement of administration policy laying out objections to the House version of the 2008 defense authorization bill.

The Bush administration had asked for a 3 percent military raise for Jan. 1, 2008, enough to match last year’s average pay increase in the private sector. The House Armed Services Committee recommends a 3.5 percent pay increase for 2008, and increases in 2009 through 2012 that also are 0.5 percentage point greater than private-sector pay raises.

No.

Does anyone believe that a liberal really cares about the troops?

Just one of the many things that I don't agree with Bush on. Like his cutting Veteran's benefits every year that he's been in office, spending billions on mercenaries, stalling on the MRAP trucks so that contributors could get sweetheart contracts and still not deliver them on schedule, ditto for body armor and a host of other ways in which he shows how much he "Supports the Troops."

Not surprisingly, the man responsible for more than 6000 combat deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan has yet to attend to single Military funeral. I guess he doesn't want to alienate Fred Phelps and his crew of picketers.

The troops deserve a raise. They have a hard job. Congress needs a pay cut. They aren't doing a very good job.

I agree the GOP has ruined america. They would hate to give anyone a payraise except themselves. They would rather give endless amounts of dollars to HALLIBURTON.

Times are tough all over. Many people are losing their jobs. People are also losing their homes. The military has received very generous funding under President Bush.

Budget cuts are being proposed for many departments to fund the war. The budget deficits are caused by this war. Our children and grand children will have to pay for this war.

Bush has always been very generous with the military.

Good question.

Yes. The pay raises should mimic the private sector. Unless supply and demand would suggest otherwise. IF we can't recruit enough soldiers, we should raise it to a level in which we can. IT should all be based on supply and demand. Anything else is just politicing and that is useless for everyone.

Interesting. The Dems want to cut the military budget to shreds, yet want to increase the pay raise by .5% just to rag on Bush.

How do you Dems plan to pay for it when you are cutting the military budget?

Ironic response: outsourcing to Blackwater, Halliburton, et al has been is so much more cost-effective.
