My understanding of the Libertarian philosophy is: the Constitution is to be taken literally. If it's not in the Constitution then it can't be done. Sort of an Amish philosophy to governing.

I think that's pretty accurate.

On foreign policy they're strictly isolationist - defend the country at the borders.

No, because that group already exists. They are known as Southern Democrats. (fiscally conservative but socially liberal)

No...they're against any kind of assistance program. No affirmative action, no welfare. Everyone is responsible for their own choices, positive or negative. It's about freedom for everyone to excel to their potential on their own merit. Or fail. Whatever the case may be.

for some reason libertarians have tied themselves to the gold standard so no its not exactly correct but similar.

Once upon a time, I almost had myself convinced I was a libertarian. Why? Because libertarians "often argue that in a truly capitalistic society, even the poorest would end up better off as a result of faster overall economic growth - which they believe likely to occur with lower taxes and less regulation."

I agree with much of what libertarianism stands for

There's that one not-so-minor thing standing in the way: Signing up to be an advocate of the gold standard. That's a show-stopper for me. If advocating the gold standard is an implicit requirement of libertarianism—and it seems to be—then I have to stop short, and content myself with being some kind of “hybrid.”

a PURE Libertarian will always choose on the side of freedom. But your definition is loosely accurate. The party has mostly been taken over by those wanting to legalize drugs. This is likely why they are generally not taken seriously on a national scale.
A lot of people are libertarian and don't even know it. I know I was. Take the World's Smallest Political Quiz at http://www.theadvocates.org/quiz.html
that should tell you where you stand.
