why do Republicans tend to ignore Alan Keyes?

Why do other Republicans, including conservatives, tend to ignore Alan Keyes? Not even ignore his political positions, but him personally. I remember reading a National Review article on a 2000 Republican primary debate Keyes attended; it said something to the effect of, "Keyes' personality enfolded the entire room. This was not a good thing." What is it about his personality that gets him laughed off?
