The Drums In Our Hearts

I hear the sound
The drums are beating
It’s so loud in my ear
My body I’m frozen
And I can’t breathe
I’m overcome with fear
Since when do looks matter?
Skin colors shouldn’t count
And clothes don’t make me at all
My religion doesn’t change me
I’m not like those few
Why is life so unclear?
I can’t sleep at night
I hear bombs
The cruel unforgiving sounds of war
The men in camouflage laugh at me
I know they want me dead
By their hateful comments and sneers
I’m proud of my heritage
I won’t change myself in anyway
But I want everyone to understand
To know we all have drums that beat
They exist in all of our hearts
I dream for peace one of these years
