What is the official Republican response to the NY Times allegations?

I've been watching several Republican talking heads blather about how horrible the NYTimes is for printing these allegations.

There response seems to have two parts

A. These are all lies. John McCain is an honest family man. He would never have an affair (even though he started "dating" his current wife while still married to the first one). Even if he did have an affair with a lobbyist, he'd never give her favors (like the ones he gave Charles Keating). Nobody will ever believe these slanderous lies.

B. The Times should have published this earlier. It might have influenced the primaries and Romney could have been the nominee. The timing is really suspicious.

These responses are contradictory. Either Repubs believe the story or they don't. They seem to be saying. We don't believe your horrible lies about John McCain, but why didn't you tell us them earlier so we could have voted against him?
Sues them for what.

They didn't say that McCain slept with her. They said that McCain's own aides blocked her from seeing him and yelled at him because McCain's aides thought he was sleeping with her. That says something about his staffer's view of his character. The NYTimes never said that he slept with her. They just reported the facts.

Let's face it, any newspaper that buries a foiled-terror plot (plans to explode bombs at Kennedy/ LaGuardia) on page A-16 doesn't have that much credibility to begin with. Since I don't read this paper I don't know what page this story is on, but I'm guessing it's A-1. Real journalism is and has been dead for quite some time. By the way, Im not a McCain supporter.

I would be suprised if the McCain camp sues the NYT
