Arthur has a spectacular aura about
What would today's Republican Party think about this candidate?

He's running as a Republican. He has a strong military background and is generally considered a war hero.

He's got plenty of political experience -- former police chief of a major city and governor of a large state, plus a Vice-President.

He's pro-gun in that he's a hunter.

But he's an major environmentalist and wants to limit access to huge tracts of land to preserve them.

Plus, he's very suspicious of big corporations and wants the Federal government to actively break up monopolies.

Would the last two stances doom his chances of getting nominated by today's Republican party?

Teddy Roosevelt could well be a popular Republican candidate in 2008.

He advocated SOME level of control over the environment and corporations when there was NONE. He could well believe that the opposite is true today - that we are over-regulated.

And with his strong national defense stance, and (I suspect) opposition to same-sex marriage and abortion on demand, he would probably be to the right of almost everyone running for the nomination this year.

So he might well be a great candidate.
