| Should I just take the first job offered?
I have recently completed the Master of Education program in Delaware and will be getting my teaching license soon. Problem is, the whole state is cutting about 93 teaching jobs & may not be hiring in the Fall. I was offered a job at a preschool, but it is only $10./hr &they can't tell me how much more I would be making in the Fall. Should I just take this job or wait until something opens up in the Fall? It's not like the population is getting smaller, there are new schools being built, should I wait? I feel bad that my husband is working so much, but I don't want to miss an opportunity, the preschool wants a two year committment. Any suggestions?I was thinking experience also, and the school districts do everything online now, they don't want any phone calls. I have been volunteering at my son's school and will be volunteering in summer programs, would that experience count on a resume as well? I am worried about the large amount of competition.

Many school districts are just beginning their Fall assessment for number of teachers needed and have just begun the hiring process. Hang in there. Be persistent. If you have mailed in applications, give them 3 weeks to a month and then follow up with a phone call to ask about the next step in the screening process. Sometimes it is this persistence that can make the difference. Once they call you for interviews, send a personal thank you note to the person who interviewed you. This will show character and a genuine interest. If you still haven't heard back after the interview, call the personnel office (where you applied) and ask to be sent on other interviews. Each principal has his or her own unique personality and staffing needs.Good Luck to you.

$10/hour is NOTHING. That equates to $20,000 over a year. I'm sure you got your masters to start earning much more than that.I make more than that just for data entry.

Experience does count on a resume. If the state is cutting 93 teaching jobs, when they hire again, most likely, the people cut will be the first interviewed/hired. Plus you'll also have to face competition from other new graduate teachers. If you take the job with the preschool, you'll gain 2 years of experience, and this will put you above the new "graduating" students. Also, the job situation will be different at that time as the 93 lost teaching positions will likely have been absorbed and there will be a new need for teachers.
