Should the academic standards of a secondary education be raised?

Should the academic standards of a secondary education be raised?

Would the US benefit as a whole from a better educated society? First, I propose that the minimum passing grade in high school should be raised from 70 to 75. Second, I think that the high school diploma should require college prep. level work, at a minimum, in order to graduate. Maybe even requiring Calculus based math/science courses and not allowing minors to drop out of high school?
