What update/system checking programs should I run on my Mac and when?

Am totally new to the Mac computer world and am still not sure of what to do with it to make sure its running well. One of my coworkers told me that there are certain programs one should run to make sure your Mac in tip top shape including all updates and checks for bugs or something like that. Some programs need to be run every day or week or month. Can someone help me with which programs I should run and when I should run them. THANKS!!!!
