How does a programming language work?

Is it that each character represents a certain byte and that's how a computer understands it? Can it understand directly, not the actual characters but their equivalents? Or is it that the bytes on computer actually don't translate into characters and that they are just in seemingly random numbers and are really the only way it can understand it?

Well games use OOP(Object oriented programming). Interactive objects such as characters have code written in a high-level language(i.e C++) that is translated to a language the computer can understand(1001100). So a code is written for the character(object) to do certain tasks when necessary. That code is translating very quickly so the computer understands what to do. Depending on the programmer code can be efficient of inefficient.
