what research participants should I use for my psychology research experiment?

I am researching if people remember concrete or abstract words easier. i guess I'll use college students. How are they chosen? Should there be equal male and female? I was thinking 6 of each. Does Race matter? I guess since the words are in english and to prevent anu queries, they should be caucasian. Maybe I won't specify...HELP PLEASE???????
