| Social Work or Psychology?
My goal is to work out of my home, counseling. I now have my associates in Human Services. I am more interested in individuals than society. I am planning to go back to school. I was told if I get a MSW I can take a test to be able to work privately. If I get a Masters in Psy I would have to get my PhD in order to work privately. If I get my MSW and then get licensed could I work out of my home counseling? Thanks!!

The answer is yes you can get an MSW and then work for about three years to get your clinical license and you can work privately (the specific rules will vary from state to state). Now from what you describe though you will not be happy as a social worker - which focus on the person and society. You probably will be better getting an license either as a counselor or marriage and family therapist - again depends on your state. In most cases a MA in a number of clinical fields will allow you to get your license just be sure the program qualifies you for the license. DA |
