Thinking about going into psychology, any advice?

I'm thinking about going into school for psychology. All my life people have come to me to help them through suicide, sexual abuse, rape, pregnancy. I've always been the person people come to me to spill their problems and seeking real help and I love it! I have a passion for breaking into the human mind and anylyzing to help make someone's life better. Any advice? how long is school? what is the upfront cost like? do you enjoy it?
