Are you talking about MLA citation? Are you citing a quotation? If so, it's quotation, quotation mark, line number, then period. Example:...the grass is singing/Over the tumbled graves” (“Wasteland” 609).

You put the full stop at the end of the sentence; then the reference.Since a reference is not a sentence, it does not need a period.
