| Placement of question mark with regard to quotation marks...?
Okay, I know the following would be correct:
Should I have told him, "That sounds fun"?
The words being quoted are not a question, so the question mark is outside the quotes. And no period is needed inside the quotes.
But... Would the following be correct?
Should I have told him, "That sounds fun. I'll meet you there"?
That's my best guess, but it seems a little odd if there's two (or more) statements being quoted in the overall question.
Opinions?!? Thanks!
I've looked it up in multiple grammar resources. Periods go inside quotation marks. Question marks and exclamation points only go inside the quotation marks when the quote itself is the question or exclamation. In my example, the quote is a statement, so it wouldn't be appropriate to have the question mark inside the quotes.
And although it would make it easier to just rework the sentence to avoid the issue, I really do need to figure out the rule. I do some proofreading for others, but I just can't find any sources that deal with this situation.
Thanks again!
