What are some ways that critical thinking and religion are compatible?

Please share your thoughts respectfully.

If critical evaluation of historical evidence regarding cultures can be regarded as valid, then the available evidence supporting the existence of Jesus (for example) is more than enough (after critical analysis) to support at least the historical basis of the religion which he founded.

Of course, the tenets of most religions hinge in some way upon faith.

However, I would contend that your belief in quantum mechanics is based upon an acceptance of the accounts given by scientists to the extent to which you fully comprehend the science. The extent to which you do not fully comprehend the principals is the extent to which you have faith in the scientists' accounts.

Faith and critical thinking are not entirely independent.

Hmm, well perhaps if one looks at the world with the glasses of someone religious ("pink coloured glasses"), they may take notice of the really good things about life and reason that they are because of a god.

i.e. if it's a really big coincidence. It's reasonable, even though it's a stretch.

I don't think they are compatible. Religion has always had the privilege of being exempt from criticism. It is just taboo to criticize religion. We always have to be politically correct. I think this is wrong. I think religion has gotten a free ride for much to long and it's about time we get past this political correctness and have an open and honest discourse about religion. I don't feel I should be obligated to just respect people's beliefs. I evaluate their reasons for their beliefs. In what other discourse are we admonished to just respect people's beliefs without justification?

abstractions that become increasingly subtle

EDIT: Well maybe I'm talking about what is called abstract reasoning. Is there a difference between that and critical thinking? I dunno. They're just words.
