I'm curious to know why the atheists are in a section called religion &spirituality?

Are you spiritual? Are you actually religious, since you spend your time arguing about no god Which in effect is still using energy on god... Either way your using your time and energy on something you don't believe exists. I assure you i'm in no intellectual conversations on unicorns or leprachauns etc etc(typical comparison of god) So what is your motivation for being here. See mine is to learn by talking with people with different perspectives of god and trying to getr people saved... Why are you here??? I'll tell you what, all responses without name calling i'll personally give a thumbs up to.
I get the answer part. But as i said you are totally knowing there isn't a god. so that would be like me getting on this site and answering on unicorns, which i wouldbelieve to bea total waste of time. So i guess i wouldn't do it.

Atheists are here because we keep directing questions to them. Now have a lemon snap and a nice glass of warm milk.

Because when we ask questions about religion in the Cats section they tell us to go away.

*sheesh*

it affects us.

religion invades our lives. i, personally, am interested in it as it relates to the culture.

i am a part of a democratic society, and, frankly, many are not qualified to make informed decisions and some of our policies are handed down straight from the pulpit.

a change in public opinion can lead to a change in public policy. we're trying to improve america, cause, basically, it sucks.

a five minute presentation which answers your question:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4fQA9mt-Mg

and my personal response to this question earlier today:

i could say that it's because people want to legislate their religion into my country's laws. or i could say that it's for the same reason as why religious people try to 'witness' to the non believers (to get you to see the truth as i see it). i could say it's because people are always asking questions about atheists and we need to be here to answer them. i could say that i am spiritual, but not religious. i could say that i was at one time a christian, and i have studied various other religions as well, so i do have something informed to add sometimes. all those things are true, and more. however the main reason i come here is because it's the most interesting section on y!a, and i like it.

and a link to the many other questions almost exactly like this one:

First off, your biggest problem is that you said you're trying to get people saved. What is it with you christians thinking that your religion is the only true religion and you have to "save our souls"? I totally respect that you believe the way you want to so why can't you let other people believe the way they choose to and respect their freedom of choice. I'm pagan and proud of it (pagan, not wiccan---which I know that you christians very often get confused).
And by the way, pagans do not believe in the devil and therefore cannot worship him. Also, we do not believe in hell and therefore will not burn in it.
It's YOUR god, it's YOUR hell, YOU burn in it.

If I drank every time I saw one of these questions, I would be slumped over and passed out, and on my way to the hospital right about now.

Fortunately, your question only makes two of what I saw today...so I'm pretty sober and can answer you.

Now, like it or not, atheism and religion, no matter how opposite disbeliefs and beliefs are, coincide with each other. Think of it as good and bad, poor and rich, now, it's atheism and religion.

Also, R&S is a highly interesting section of YAnswers and we like asking and answering questions here as well as the rest of you believers.

Would you like a drink?

Maybe to ask and answer questions about religion.

"Since you spend your time arguing about no god"

No I don't.

Nice try anyway. I ask questions about religion and spiritual philosophy.

You don't seem to understand that you deny thousands of gods and goddesses, yet can't see how you are the same as me...

I bet you'd be asking questions in the Unicorn Section if Unicornists were telling your kid that he was going to Hell for not believing in Unicorns. Or if Unicornists were trying to make Unicornism a part of the science curriculum.

Or if Unicornists had killed, stoned, burned and mutilated non-Unicornists for centuries...

Or if millions of Unicornists were lining up in global war against Leprechaunists, both claiming that their Holy Books foretell 'Armageddon'....

Etc...

Or would you simply not be interested...? Even if Unicornism was the majority?
