Because the term has been used for bad groups in the last one hundred years. Before that when a cult existed it was just one of many. If it lasted long enough and grew large enough it was called culture. Any new group doesn't want to be just temporary.

No one likes to be mocked and religious people in general hold their beliefs in high regard. Personally I would prefer not to be called a cult, However in a sense I expect it because Jesus said his TRUE followers WOULD be hated by the world just as he was. People say alot of ignorant, stupid and malicious things about my religion, like calling us, 'fanatics, or brain-washed(my personal favorite), zombies, etc'. But I realize that things will happen, it verifies that I am part of the True religion, so although its not enjoyable in the moment, it is in some aspects a comfort because it fulfills Jesus words. Its funny too because people talk about how 'holy' they are and 'lord' 'lord' all the time, but yet when it comes to staying out of politics like Jesus did (voting and patriotism etc), pagan Holidays - which Jesus did NOT do(Christmas, Easter, New Years etc), and false teachings that he DIDNT teach. (Trinity, Immortal soul, Hellfire)...they seem to forget how 'holy' they are. And they call US brainwashed??........uh, ok.

because when someone refers to it as a cult it usually meant to insult.

If we say it is a religion, and it is. Out of respect for us and our beliefs, don't tells us you are wrong it is cult.

Because cults are organizations that have a short history, are usually led by one person or a small elite group, and are insunlated and secretive. The word "cult" (when referring to an actual organization) insinuates one leader and blind followers. For example, the phrase "Someone drank the Kool-Aid" comes from the Jim Jones cult. That's why someone might be offended when you call their religion a cult....whether it truly is on or not.
