What's the difference between a religion and a cult?

I was raised Catholic, but hadn't really practiced since I was a kid. Since then I've seen a few cults on the news, like Heaven's Gate, David Coresh, and Jonestown.

Then I went to church recently, and when prompted, everyone spoke in unison with no script. It seriously spooked me...like I was surrounded by zombies. No one was thinking for themselves, just following what they had been taught. It felt "cult-ish" to me.

So, what's the difference between a religion and a cult?

rebel the latter is all sex, drugs, brainwashing, & bad dresses you need to wear
