Is it possible that religion has a tendency to make people afraid of knowledge?

I am by no means afraid of knowledge and I have the education to back up my statement.

I would suggest how some atheists have tried to censor the Intelligent design advocates that they are the ones who are afraid.

I'm sure its possible that for some it would make them fearful of knowledge....but for me, spirituality has lead me to seek more knowledge.Every PhD is a doctor of what? Philosophy. And every philosopher knows, that no matter what you study, it always comes down to "why are we here?" and "what is the meaning of life?". So I think that there are lots of people out there that feel the same way that I do....that the big questions lead us to wonder about things larger than ourselves.

For many religious people scientific knowledge is like playing with fire . The Catholic Chuch said this when it arrested book sellers and buyers soon after the invention of the Printing Press . And Islamic Law prohibited the use of the Printing Press for over 50 years because it was considered a tool of Satan . Edward J . Atheists did not try to censor I.D. It was science teachers . many religious people believe I.D. is false . Science teachers demanded that I.D. not be labled as science , because there is no scientific evidence for it ! They said , and were supported by the courts after a lenthy trial , that I.D. (AKA Creationism) is a religious concept and should be labeled as such .http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10545387/Peter C /// having knowlege OF Gnosticism (or Harry Potter Books for that matter) is NOT the same as having true scientific knowlege and understanding .

No, that is not true AT ALL. Many intelligent, educated people are also believers in God.Not bragging, just describing the situation. I went to a University and to a Catholic College and was an A student. I am also a Catholic Mystic, and I live in the modern age. I also Love God. I got A's in science and philosophy, history, anthropology, English, Greek and Latin Vocabulary, Theatre, Art, Psychology, Education...... etc. etc. So do you have any comments on that, that aren't derogatory? No, I'm not an exception.....God doesn't only make atheists into seekers after knowledge, see? I have a huge library, too....because I like to read. My main interests in reading are philosophy, literature, biography, and NON-FICTION.

This is the teaching of Gnosticism that is so unkowingly becoming entrenched into the mind of the public. The above answers are evidence, if you 'know' what I am talking about. http://www.sundayschoolcourses.com/heresy/index.htm#_Toc502048258

Dont assume that a religious person is looking for truth in his/her spirituality. As a Roman Catholic I can tell you that when I want inspiration and motivation to do whats right, I look twards religion. When I want knowledge, I open a science book. They both play different roles in my life, and they arn't mutually exclusive. I believe in the Big Bang and Evolution, but I also believe the root of all that is God. Dont assume that science is all that rational and pure. The truth is much of what we know about history is speculation and "educated guesses," some turn out to he highly probably, others are disproved. The same stands for the physical science. Have you personally seen an electron, atom, or human cell? No, nobody has. Its a matter of "secular" faith. Some physisist tells you it make mathematical sense, and you believe it, I believe it. Have you seen an organism evolve? Can you tell me exactly what caused the Bronze Age collapse of Greece, where you there? No. I hope you get my point, you read these answers in a book and take them to be true. Every idea about the world you have, some fare more informed scholar will disagree with you. Atheists, please dont pretend to be some uber-rational superhuman, you read stuff in books and take it to be true. Granted, many of the things you read is more proveable than that which is in the Bible, but you are making the mistake of looking for fact. A spiritual person looks for illumination.
