Is it possible that religion has a tendency to make people afraid of knowledge?

The substance from which religion is made is not based on any tangible knowledge or information – it’s all just make believe. It’s like a house of cards that can tumble at any moment. The more religious a person is, the more they have filled their minds and their perception of reality with religious substance. Knowledge is the opposite of this substance. Knowledge is to an excessively religious person what water was to the Wicked Witch of the West (“I’m melting!”). Beliefs make religious people feel all warm and gooey inside, so isn’t it logical that cold hard truth and knowledge is somewhat intimidating for religious people?

I couldn't agree with you more. But if the zealots find this, prepare to be flamed.edit-wow, they have been pretty gentle so far....

no.The more religious a person is, the more they have filled their minds and their perception of reality with religious substance. Knowledge is the opposite of this substance.Ya thunk Isaac Newton (ardent Christian) had any knowledge ? Oh, sorry, you probably have no idea who he was...

No. The first schools, universities, and hospitals were religious and science owes its beginnings to religion as well.

I completely agree.Overally-Religious people are usually afraid of simple things in life like technology because they're considered the 'devil'. That's for extreme religious people. Most religious people just don't accept obvious truth just because it contradicts with their religion.

A man is accepted into a church for what he believes and is turned out for what he knows.-- Mark Twain

I don't find your question to be valid. My beliefs certainly don't make me feel all warm and gooey inside when I'm reminded to "take up my cross and follow Christ;" or, when I'm encouraged by the Word to forgive someone 490 times in a day when someone has hurt or offended me. It is the knowledge of scripture combined with the WISDOM of its application that produces fruit in a Christian's life. What exactly does knowledge alone produce in the life of a non-believer?Blessings.

No dear, while there may be some who fit your description, there are many such as myself who seek out knowledge from all avenues and attempt to put it all together so to speak. I'm not there yet but that does not stop me from continuing to learn and grow in knowledge and in truth.

Maybe christians fear that if they became atheist by thinking too much they'd actually be wrong and they'd go to hell so...don't start thinking.

Anything is possible but that certainly wouldn't be true for the vast majority of religious people. generally the arrogance of non-believers makes them convince themselves that these people who disagree with them must be either stupid or uneducated. it's a shame when people like that close their minds to knowledge..
