Is there a formal way to renounce your religion?

Let's say someone was baptised in the church when they were a child, but now wants to be agnostic OR part of another religion. Is there some sort of formal or "official" way that people say they are no longer part of that religion?

Or do they just forget about it.

You could try and get excommunicated.

But I hear that requires quite a bit of effort. They don't like to let go.
