Why does religion seem to create so much intense arguing and even war?

We know that causes of arguments, fighting, and war are also
about gaining basic needs and material things - food, land, etc. but what is so important about religion that it causes
so much intense fighting as well as debate?

Religion divides rather than unites

Because too many people who follow religion believe their faith gives them the absolute right to step on others who don't share exactly the same beliefs.
