Christianity a fear based religion?

I see this kind of quote often here at Answers: "Christianity is definitely a religion based on fear. Hell, and Satan are necessary elements the church uses to keep people in line."

I personally know of no one who is in fear of hell who is a Christian. I don't know of anyone who is a Christian who became one through a fear of hell. Could it be that a whole lot of people here do not really have a clue as to what the Gospel and Christianity is all about? Any thoughts?
