Why don't people who claim to be religious actually follow the tenets of

their religion? I think that this is clearly obvious if you live in any western nation, but a good is example is that 60% of catholics in Italy don't go to confession. (source: http://www.cnn.com/2008/LIVING/wayoflife/03/10/vatican.updates.sins.ap/index.html) Furthermore, many people across Europe, the UK and the US claim to be christian, but never go to church.

Why do these people claim to be religious if they don't actually follow their religion? It doesn't make any sense to me.
