How many books have you read on the subject of religion/spirituality, and...

...which were the best ones? The books could be pro or anti religion.

the end of faith by sam harris was a great book, also Dante's inferno was interesting to read just to get an idea of how far people will go with brutal torture for those who don't believe as they do.

Besides the OT and NT and a number of Gnostic Gospels, writings of St Teresa d' Avila, The Way of the Cross, and most of the writings of Fr. Thomas Merton and Joseph Campbell, I've read the Principal Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, the Devi Mahatmyam, Ashtavakra Gita, Rama Gita, Vivekachudamani, the Shiva Sutras, the Spanda Karikas, Mahanirvana Tantra, Saundarya Lahari, Prajnaparamita Hridaya Sutra, Dhammapada, Tao te Ching, Guru Granth Sahib, and I think I read the Koran many years ago. I've also read the Sri Ramakrishna Kathamrita and other biographies of Sri Ramakrishna and Sri Sarada Devi, much of the writings of Swami Vivekananda, some of the conversations of Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj. I've also read most of the literature out there--both pop and scholarly --on Kundalini phenomenology. I've read parts of the Enneads by Plotinus, some of Platos tractates and some of the classical tractates of the Hermeticism and am now reading work on chaos magic by Phil Hines and Frater UD. There's dozens more books I could name, but I think you get the picture. Many of the books I've named are ones that I reference and return to.

I especially like the dialogues of Nisargadatta Maharaj and some of Joseph Campbell's work although he gets redundant.

I'm constantly reading so its tough to say how many but on a profound level.....
Bible for reference because I am able to make interpretations of it & others' dreams.
The Book of Enoch - seventh from Adam, fills in gaps about the origins of sin
I like re-reading the Gnostic Gospels too.
Alistair McGrawth his defense of Dawkins is very clever.
The Messages of Our Lady - in medjugorje in 1981-present day
More recently, Edgar Cayce & his interpretation (www.near-death,com)

I have read many.

Of the ones that stick out:
1. A History of God - it chronicles the deveopment of god-myths through the ages and shows exactly where contemporary religions fit in to the developing mythology.

2. Micromotives and Macrobehaviors - not about religion at all. It's a great introduction into Game Theory. It really brings home how human behavior is as predictable as any other phenomenon and gives a fantastic basis (if you read between the lines) for the development of objective morality.

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance--Robert Pirsig
Christians as the Romans Saw Them--Robert Louis Wilken
Pagans and Christians--Robin Lane Fox

I've read thousands of books about religion and spirituality, most of them garbage. These three stand out, being non-fiction and all.
