Religion and Politics?

With things as they are now in this country, with the primaries and such, I've been thinking about this question for a while now.

If this country's founding fathers didn't want religion and politics to mix, why do so many people base their vote soley on the religious views? Take the Republicans for example, many candidates have boasted to be the ultimate conservative christians and base all of their decisions based on their beliefs. Like with with our current president Mr. Shrub, many people voted for him not because of his policies, but his religious beliefs.

So I guess my question in a shortened sense is why and how did this religious grasp over politics come to be?
P.S.
I personally think that an athiest should be president since they don't have any religious views so the problem of religion and politics wouldn't be a problem
