Why did the co-discoverer of evolution and natural selection
later become a proposer of Intelligent Design:

"We shall obtain a fuller and clearer insight into the course of nature, and with increased confidence that the 'mighty maze' of Being we see everywhere around us is 'not without a plan."

And then embrace spirituality?

What does evolution have to do with spirituality?

For the record he didn't ever "change his mind" on evolution.
He just (incorrectly) believed that it doesn't apply to humans.

People change their minds.

A. N. Whitehead, who co-wrote Principia Mathematica with Russell, abandoned rationality in favour of irrationalism later in life. Einstein denied the uncertainty principle and later accepted it. People refer to the "early" and "late" Wittgenstein such was the change in his views. Churchill changed parties twice.

Enough explanation? Why do you want a specifically atheist perspective on what is a pretty general human trait.
