How about opening up the drilling and the royalties are locked into paying down the national debt?

Open it all up at 25% royalties, and all the royalties are locked into paying down the national debt. make the oil companies be responsible, clean up the messes, no bs, that means serious fines for pollution not handled properly. Its a win win, we get the debt paid down and they get to the oil and gas and fuel prices should come down.I see we mostly have boo birds out spouting the negative, Cathy S doesn't know a thing about royalties with that stupid answer evidently.Kathy is I mean

I think it would take more than that to eat up $9,392,522,229,356 in debt.

That will never happen. Congress will just move the money to other spending programs and enact legislation which will allow them to do so.

They will call you a communist for even suggesting that.

"...make the oil companies be responsible, clean up the messes, no bs, that means serious fines..." screeeeeeech.....I forsee the price of gas raising to $15/gallon under your proposal...Please always remember, it's the consumer that pays, not the corporations, ever (aka. real trickle-down economics).

Excellent idea! It would sort of be like the Permanent Dividend we get in Alaska, except we would pay down the debt instead of us getting it. I think this is a very wise question TY

You have to be kidding.Do you really believe, even for a moment, that Congress would allow that money to escape their clutches. Anytime Congress raises taxes or imposes new taxes, regardless of what they call it, the majority party allocates that money to enhancing its own power and its own pocket books. There is no way that Congress would use new found money to pay down debt. That doesn;t help them get reelected.

If there are any royalties handed out due to producing oil on Federal (yours, mine and ours) land, I demand my share. It was your, mine and our MONEY that purchased that land. Congress and the Senate won't do a damn thing to help until they know they will be voted out of office the first time they don't heed to the demands of the majority and not the special interest groups.Watch for context... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPch2k63uj4

You do realize that in a capitalistic society, the government does not arbitrarily take away profits to pay off debts IT accumulated. Unless you are advocating the nationalization of the oil industry, that would be illegal. And based on government history, if we were to nationalize the oil industry, they would just find some new way to spend their profits. So either way, it wouldn't work.Edit: Well, please enlighten me, because your question is totally unintelligible as it is currently written.
