Getting a CAPTCHA right is an artform and is in general very difficult, luckily for you there are lots of resources. A great one that is also very useful to researchers is [1] which provides you with words scanned out of old books which couldn't be automatically read. The captcha is guaranteed to be hard for an attacker because its already failed being OCR'ed once.
