| Why was the age 65 chosen for Social Security? This is a question for my ageism class... if that helps.      |

| At the time it was chosen most people did not live to make it to 65, or much past it. That is why they talk about raising it to 70 or even 75. It is the only way we can afford it.

| Yes.... Good Question. FDR actually made up the Soc Sec to give the Government More Power. The (average) Life Span, at that time, was 56---- and you couldn't draw Soc Sec until 62. Which meant that the Average Person would pay in Soc Sec Tax for over 40 years---- and then die before collecting any. Check it out. (And at that time, I don't believe that the spouse or kids got anything when the breadwinner died.) |
