sociology 101 help... homosexuals in the military?

In a statement made in the Chicago Tribune the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of staff, Marine General Peter Pace, said this in response to the military's current "don't ask, don't tell" policy about homosexuals serving in the military, which allows them to do so as long as they keep their sexual orientation a secret.

"I believe homosexual acts between two individuals to be immoral and that we should not condone immoral acts,... I do not believe the US is will serves by a policy that says it is OK to be immoral in any way." (qtd Chicago Tribune)

QUESTION: Using a sociological perspective, how would those who agree with General Pace see his position on the issue of gays serving in the military as being justified IN TERMS of the american core values of FREEDOM, INDIVIDUALISM, and EQUALITY?
I am needing to correct a test I took in my Soc. 101 class. This question seems to completely contradict itself in my opinion, because his opinion doesn't seem to fit the American values at all to me. However, I need to take his side for the question I missed... so... someone help me understand that point of view so I can write a paragraph on it! hahaha
