Social Work Major and Sociology? So I am applying to go to a 2 year college this coming fall, BUT they do not have a social work major and the closest thing they have is Sociology and my question is, do I just major in sociology at community college first and then apply for an accredited social work major after I transfer? Will that affect anything? Also, What is family studies? I want to be a social worker later on, but since I`m going to a junior college that does not offer a social work major what do I do?

Most two year colleges don't offer social work as a major but may offer 'human services' instead. Sociology is another option for a two year school though it's mainly for prereq courses for further schooling. An associate's in sociology is probably more like a liberal arts degree with a few more courses in sociology (not sure if there is a fieldwork/clinical component). Perhaps you can take some courses in human services/sociology if offered such as group dynamics or group counseling and that may provide one with a flavor of what the field is like. Family studies may be more geared toward the dynamics of the family and conflict within as someone else mentioned. Some schools offer a master's degree in marriage and family counseling; not sure if it's based out of a social work or counseling degree. For general career info: http://www.bls.gov/oco and search 'social workers', 'counselors' or such. For US colleges: http://www.utexas.edu/world/univ Please steer clear of online, for profit schools such as university of phoenix and strayer as they are merely out to 'make a profit': http://www.uopsucks.com For volunteer opportunities: http://www.volunteermatch.org Perhaps one can look into a crisis hotline as a volunteer telephone worker.

i'm not aware of a "social work" major. social workers are sociologists, and typically major in sociology. the way you're talking about family studies, it's either an emphasis for the sociology major, or just a title for a few classes that deal with it. you should major in sociology. have fun, it's a fascinating subject!!

well if you major in sociology you can become a social worker any way so... They should transfer but they will be general credits and when you go to the other school you just declare your major as social work! It shouldn't affect anything, if it does anything then it would help because you would be getting the sociology classes out of the way. Family studies is basically Human development which is basically a combination of sociology and psychology but I'm not sure. You can look it up on collegeboard.com or princetonreview.com I'm also going to be a social worker! I'm attending a school for social work though! Good Luck and it will all work out!! =)

If you went to a four year college only, the first two years are often spent taking your general classes, such as English, Math, etc. So if you decide to go to a community college, you can almost major in anything as long as you get the general requirements and as long as those general requirements are accepted by the four year school that you go to. All that to say, yes, Sociology would be fine. Sociology looks at large groups of people and how they are affected as a whole. Psychology might be better because it looks at people individually. But it really doesn't matter. I have no idea what family studies are at that school. It sounds like it looks at people in connection to their family. They might be great for someone interested in social work. You should also talk to someone at the community college, like an advisor, who can clearly tell you what you want to know about their majors and if the credits will transfer to a particular four year college.
