What would be some free data recovery software (non-trial) to restore a drive?

first person to give me a link to the download that works gets 10 points. The HD is an IPOD 80GB transferring USB. I'd like to get pictures from our vacation off there. The IPOD crashed, also is that a monthly problem for others?
