How to reformat a computer without loosing all the softwares previously installed?

My friend told me that I should copy the folder named "Program Files" and their shortcuts which is located in my WINDOWS folder to partition D or whatever. After formatting, I should place the Program Files folder at its original place. Does it works?? Please help me...
