Unable to install software from control panel?

I have a computer with Windows XP and trying to uninstall some older programs. When I go to the control panel, the change/remove button only appears for a few items that have been loaded recently. I recently loaded McAfee that I get thru Comcast for free and want to uninstall Norton (I am unable to find an uninstall for Norton in its program), among some other programs. Any ideas on what I should do?
