what do software engineers do?

im majoring in compuer science...im actually taking a software engineering course..but our professor seems to have no actual hands on experience and just lectures from the book...i really haven't been able to get a good grasp on the topic as far as what software engineers are responsible for

if anyone as information on software engineering, it would be much appreciated
