How do i get my dvd rom discs onto my computer without using the provided...

...software they give me? I have a Camorder that i bought a while ago, and never tried to convert the videos into my PC. Now, I have a vista computer, and cannot use the XP software on my computer. I was told to use windows movie maker, but I dont know how to get the videos to transfer onto my computer. What steps should I take to transfer them onto my computer?
