looking for the best video editing software for pictures and video.?

i have been making videos but i find that i have to edit my pictures with microsoft digital suite, edit video with text with windows movie maker and use the effects of onetruemedia.com to get them the way i want them to be. is there an affordable program that gets the cool effects of onetruemedia but has the capabilities of windows movie maker to add text with pretty fonts and take frames out of the middle of video? i love the effects both onetruemedia and wmm offer but i find i am bored of them now. i am making video montages for family birthday celebrations but i want to mix music, quotes, pictures, videos and effects that are more than fade and wipe. any suggestions?
