There are four software updates: 1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.1.3, and 1.1.4. As you may already know 1.1.4 is the latest and should be best in terms of bug fixes. If you plan on jailbreaking, there is no need to fear if you don't have 1.1.1 because ZiPhone can jailbreak your iPod touch or iPhone from any software update.
All software updates are free.
Note: Jailbreaking is NOT covered under Apple warranty

There is one software upgrade which adds 5 apps to the iPod touch. They are Mail, Maps, Weather, Stocks, and Notes which were originally on iPhone. Jailbreaking will keep those apps.
The upgrade also has some changes in terms of software like custumize the Home screen, get chapters in movies and the ability to save webclips to your Home screen.
All this is in one software update which costs 20$.
