What kind of software configuration should go into the windows registry?

Hello,

I'm trying to broaden my understanding of the windows registry and how I should utilize it for windows applications.

When developing windows software, what general rules should I follow when adding configuration settings to the windows registry as opposed to a config or a properties file.
